Final Year Project Guidelines 2008/2009

Guidelines for National Diploma Final Year Project

Session 2008/2009

 

1.      Initial Preparation

1.      You are required to provide a NEW BLANK diskette or pen drive to copy the following files:

    1. Drawing Title Block.VSD
    2. Project Gantt Chart.XLS
    3. Project Guidelines.DOC
    4. Project Log Sheet.DOC
    5. Project Report Template.DOT
    6. Project Synopsis.DOC
    7. Report Covers.DOC
    8. Requirements for Final Report.DOC

2.      You are required to submit a synopsis outlining the design concept of your project.  If your project is associated with other project, you should mention this in your synopsis and explain the allocation of tasks among different members.  Use the file “Project Synopsis.DOC”.

 

2.      Attendance

1.      You are required to report to the Project Coordinator at the beginning and at the end of EVERY project period (at 8:00am and at 4:30pm ). 

    1. Mr Manuel I Victoria    -           ND in Instrumentation and Control Engineering and
    2. Cikgu Norjemee Bin Abdullah Jenek - ND in Electrical and Electronic Engineering

2.      If the Project Coordinator is not available, you should report to other staff assigned to take your attendance.

3.      You are required to obtain initial of your Project Supervisor for you log-sheet at the end of EVERY project period (at 4:30pm).  If your Project Supervisor is not available, you should obtain initial of your Project Coordinator.

 

3.      Documentation

 3.1.               General

1.      You will be required to submit a Final Report (one copy).

2.      You are required to keep record of your project activities on the project log-sheets.

3.      Your reports should be written using Microsoft Word.  Use the “Project Report Template.DOT” to create your report.

4.      All Figures and Tables should be properly captioned.

5.      You are encouraged to use the Drawing Title Block format (you need not necessary use Visio; you could use other software such as AutoCAD).  The format is given in the file “Drawing Title Block.VSD”.

6.      Remember to keep your report precise and concise.  Do NOT explain about the fundamental principles of components and laws such as Ohm’s Law, resistors, transistors, SCR, etc.  Describe the operation of the circuits.

7.      You should prepare your report concurrently with the project works.

8.      All reports should be printed on white A4 80gm plain papers.

9.      Use the appropriate cover in “Project Covers.DOC”.  The report cover should be printed on white A4 fancy card.  Include an A4 fancy card at the back of your report.

10.  You are required to bind your reports with binding comb.  The report should be protected with A4 plastic transparency covers in front and at the back.

11.  All reports and log-sheets should be submitted to your Project Supervisor.

12.  You will be required to submit the softcopy of your reports ( Final) as well as other project documents such as program files, drawing files, presentation, and etc.

 

3.2.               Synopsis

1.      Before commencing your project works, you are required to submit a Synopsis consisting, at least, of the followings:

a.       Preliminary design concept with system block diagram and layout of the project.

b.      Preliminary Bill of Material specifying the specification and quantity required for each material.

2.      Use the format and styles in the template “Synopsis Template.DOT”.

 

3.3.               Final Report

1.      After completion of your project works, you are required to submit a Final Project Report consisting of, at least, the followings:

a.       Design Concept

b.      System Block Diagram

c.       System Operations

d.      Descriptions of Operations of Individual Circuits

e.       Requirements as specified in the “Requirements for Final Report.DOC”.

2.      Exact list of components/materials, cost and list of equipments should be attached in the Appendix.

3.      Use the format and styles in the template “Project Report Template.DOT”.

4.      You will be required to submit a draft copy to your Project Supervisor.  Do not bind this copy and print all pages (including the cover) on white A4 80gm plain papers.

 

3.4.               Log-Sheet

1.      It is your responsibility to keep your project log-sheet up-to-date after EVERY project period and obtain the initial of your supervisor to verify your works.

2.      You are required to obtain the initial (with date) of your supervisor after EVERY project period (at 4:30pm).  This will be used to mark your attendance.

3.      It is your responsibility to make copies of log sheets if necessary.

4.      You will be required to submit ALL your log-sheet at the end of your project, and it will form part of your project assessment.

 

4.      Assessment

1.      Your understanding of the project, efficiency, initiative, quality of works, sense of responsibility, house keeping and independency will form major parts of your project assessment.

2.      You will also be assessed on your innovative in terms of changing the design to suit available resources, as well as identifying alternative sources of materials or facilities.

3.      Other assessment criteria include quality of documents, commitment, presentation skill, team work, communication skill and workability of the product.

5.      Your Responsibilities

1.      You are responsible to research for required information such as circuit diagrams.

2.      You are advised to purchase a 2” Ring File to keep all documents related to your project including your log sheets.

3.      You should have the circuit diagram of any circuit you are going to construct and test.  The circuit diagram should be properly drawn on a single piece of paper and carried along while testing the circuit.  Understanding of the circuit operation is crucial in the learning process.

4.      It is your responsibility to print your reports and other documents.

5.      It is your responsibility to bind your report.

6.      The Department does NOT provide printing and binding facilities.

7.      It is your responsibility to provide your own stationeries (papers, diskettes, etc).

8.      You are responsible to ensure you submit relevant document as scheduled under the Important Datelines.

9.      You are responsible to clean up the place where you work and to keep all materials/equipments/ tools properly after EVERY project period.

10.  You are required to make full use of the time during your allocated project period.  You might NOT be allowed to work on your project outside the allocated project period.  However, your meeting with Project Supervisor could be arranged outside the allocated project period.  Time management is crucial in any project.

 

6.      Rules for Requesting Materials and Equipments

1.      Students are NOT allowed to enter the storeroom without the permission of the store technician.

2.      ALL requests of materials and equipments should be according to the following procedure:

a.       Complete the “Tools & Equipment Loan / Material Issue” Form

b.      Obtain approval from your Project Supervisor

c.       Submit the Form to store technician

d.      Store technician will issue requested items subject to availability

3.      It is your responsibility to ensure that the equipments/tools you have borrowed are kept in good order and safe.

4.      Do not leave the equipments/tools unattended and do not leave it with your instructor or Project Supervisor.

5.      Return the equipments/tools after EVERY project period, unless permitted by the store technician.

6.      You will be liable to any damage or lost of the equipments/tools EVEN if you have left the equipments/tools with your instructor or Project Supervisor.
